Leigh
Ann is the newest member of the New Horizons team, joining the
practice in August 2005. Leigh Ann graduated from midwifery
school in 1999, and started to practice locally in 2000, after
moving to Florida to escape the New England winters and be close to
family. She holds a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a certification in
Nurse-Midwifery from the Baystate Medical Center Nurse-Midwifery
Education Program, also in Massachusetts. She is licensed in
the state of Florida as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.
Prior to becoming a midwife, Leigh Ann had
10 years of experience as a labor and delivery, post-partum, and
newborn nurse. She worked as a birth assistant in a
freestanding birth center where she assisted women through natural
labor and childbirth with minimal medical intervention. She
taught prepared childbirth classes as a Lamaze Certified Childbirth
Educator and has extensive experience, both professional and
personal, with breastfeeding support.
Leigh Ann derives great satisfaction from
caring for women and their families during the childbearing process.
She believes that a positive, empowering experience during labor and
birth holds enormous potential for spiritual and emotional growth,
for both mother and family. She strongly supports natural
childbirth, but also respects a woman's ability to make choices best
for her. She too is available for a full-scope practice
including obstetrical care, waterbirths, well-woman gynecology,
family planning, perimenopause, and gentle care and counseling for
teens.
When she's not busy with her career, Leigh
Ann and her husband Gregg are occupied raising their two small
children, Sam and Anna (a waterbirth baby!). She enjoys
camping, hiking, baking, running, and Kung Fu. While she would
prefer to have a cat, they have a prolific pair of Australian
bearded dragons, Spike and Ruby, and a hamster, Puffy, as pets.
