Dr.
Lisa M. Cohen is a native New Yorker. She grew up in Merrick, a suburb of
New York City, which is located on Long Island. She graduated from the State
University of New York at Albany Cum Laude with a major in Sociology and
also studied pre-med. She started her post graduate career with a Doctorate
of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College in Marietta, Georgia, where
she earned her degree Magna Cum Laude. She continued her education at the
New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in May 1995. She was
awarded the American Medical Women’s Association award for the highest
academic achievement for a graduating woman physician. She completed her
internship and residency in the Bi-County/ Henry Ford Health System in
Detroit, Michigan in 1998. She also earned a certificate of added
qualification in Psychiatry. She is board certified in Family Medicine and
is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and is a Fellow of the
American Osteopathic Board of Family Practitioners.
Before relocating to the Tampa Bay area she practiced at a large Family
Practice Clinic in New Baltimore, Michigan. Dr. Cohen presently works with
Suncoast
Clinical Research as a Clinical Research Investigator based out of New
Port Richey, Florida where she medically supervises Clinical Phase II-IV FDA
Drug trials for large pharmaceutical companies. This keeps her on the
cutting edge of medicine. This fall she joins the staff of New Horizons as a
part- time primary care consultant for patients who are already part of our
practice.
Dr’s Cohen and Vendeland met in New York while in
medical school and have been
together ever since. Dr. Cohen had worked behind the scenes helping to develop the New Horizons mission of providing care for women
that is dignified, different and cutting edge before actually starting to
see patients with us. Hence, the “Newer Concepts in
Healthcare for Women,” tag line on our practice literature!
In her free time she enjoys cooking, traveling, watching Guiding Light (the
soap opera her mother got her hooked on decades ago,) and shopping. She has
a fond love of all animals, which explains the Mother-Child animal theme in
the office exam rooms. Foxes are her favorite wildlife animals because of
their beauty, cunning nature and intelligence. Her favorite animal of
all, however, is her Husky-Beagle named
Kobie.
In December of 2006, assisted by our
midwifes and friend Dr. Wanda Torres, she and Dr. Vendeland welcomed
the birth of their daughter, Logan
Merrit Cohen Vendeland. Needless to say, their home life
is now incredibly busy!
